Capitals-Canadiens delayed 11 minutes in the first period for hole in the boards

After a fast start for the Caps on Saturday with an early Jay Beagle goal, things slowed way down as a hole in the boards cause an 11-minute delay in Montreal.

Matt Niskanen went in to check Canadiens forward Torrey Mitchell behind the Capitals' net and his foot kicked into the base board creating a small hole. You can see the play in the video above.

The referees took a puck over to the hole and appeared to experiment with it to see if it could affect play. When they determined it could, the ice crew went to work and replaced the board.

The response on Twitter, of course, were great.

The delay did the Caps no favor as they cooled off after a hot start and Montreal scored a few minutes after play resumed to tie the game.
