Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen left Wednesday's game in the first period after a dangerous hit from Patrice Bergeron and would not return.
Late in the first, Niskanen was drilled head-first into the boards by Bergeron. While it appeared that Niskanen skated into Bergeron's path, the hit was made more egregious as Bergeron extended his arms to follow through on the hit.

Bergeron was issued a minor penalty on the play.
The Capitals first reported Niskanen was probable to return. Then at the start of the third period, he was declared out.
