The NHL confirmed on Thursday that Alex Ovechkin will be suspended for one game for withdrawing from the All-Star Game.

Per NHL rules, a player who is named to the All-Star Game and does not participate will be suspended for one game, either the game preceding the All-Star festivities or the one immediately after. As the Caps have played their final game before the All-Star Break, Ovechkin will miss the team's next game on Feb. 2 against the Florida Panthers.

Barry Trotz announced after Wednesday's loss to the Philadelphia Flyers that Ovechkin has elected not to participate in the event due to a lingering lower-body injury that he has dealt with since November. Ovechkin was the leading vote-getter among Metropolitan Division players and was named team captain.

John Tavares of the New York Islanders will take over as captain.
