For the third consecutive week, a Capitals player has been named among the NHL’s top stars. T.J. Oshie was named the third star of the week for the week ending Jan. 22, the NHL announced Monday.
Oshie recorded six points in Washington’s three games over the week including a three-point night against Pittsburgh and a goal and an assist against his former team St. Louis.
Oshie is in the final year of his contract with the Capitals and is showing the team why they need to re-sign him for next season. But with 31 points through 38 games playing alongside Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin, Oshie may prove too expensive. His contract situation will no doubt be one of the biggest offseason questions facing the Caps this summer.
Pittsburgh’s Connor Sheary was named first star and New York Islanders goalie Thomas Greiss was second.
The Capitals have now claimed one of the three stars of the week throughout their 13-game point streak. Nicklas Backstrom was named the league’s top star for the week ending on Jan. 15 and Braden Holtby was the third star for the week ending on Jan. 8.
