For now, they’re just the “Washington football team.” But eventually, Dan Snyder and the organization formerly known as “Redskins” will pick a new name to represent the franchise moving forward.
Though the team has made no official announcement as to its intentions, one name currently gaining momentum among players, fans and the media is “Red Wolves.” According to one sportsbook, the name has emerged as the clear front-runner.

The Washington Post reported Monday that the “preferred replacement name has been held up by trademark issues.” According to trademark squatter Martin McCaulay, who holds the rights to several potential names, the “only name now in a trademark fight” is Red Wolves—currently the point of contention between Arkansas State and Chattanooga.
Not for nothing, starting quarterback Dwayne Haskins has also voiced his support for the Red Wolves, as has former defensive back Fred Smoot and original Washington draftee Will Compton. Current Washington defensive end Jonathan Allen, a Red Wolves supporter, ignited Twitter by tweeting “HTTR” last week in what many perceived to be as an indication the new team name will still begin with “R.”
Washington has yet to give a timeline for when it expects to make its decision. But for now, Red Wolves appears to be leading the pack.
