Shakira Austin had one of the biggest nights of her life Monday when the Mystics selected her with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 WNBA Draft. The Ole Miss product and former Maryland Terrapin has been one of the most productive centers in college basketball for the last four years and she’ll now have the chance to showcase her talents on the professional stage in Washington.

Along for the ride is Austin’s grandmother, who showed up to the draft in New York City wearing a fit her granddaughter helped pick out for her.

Austin caught up with NBC Sports Washington’s Chris Miller over a Zoom call this week and talked about the outfit came together.

“I have to take the credit for it,” Austin said. “She didn’t wanna go all out when I first told her about the draft and I told her, she was asking about the attire and I’m like, ‘Grandma, you have to step.’

“Everyone was all surprised because she’s this old woman with heels on but I’m like, ‘This is nothing, y’all.’ I told her, I said, ‘Grandma, you’re gonna have to do better than this for my draft because you have too many outfits that I’ve seen you put together,’…She was blowing my phone up. She had a group chat. She sent about five different suits.”

Naturally, Austin's grandmother was the talk of WNBA Draft night. Austin’s tweet showed over 45,000 views at time of publishing. Her grandmother isn’t on Twitter, but she’s been blown away by the response from fans.

“She put it on and she’s still shocked,” Austin said. “She don’t know much about social media but I think she knows when I tell her people are talking about her.”
