The Washington Nationals exercised a 2017 team option on left-handed pitcher Gio Gonzalez, the team announced Thursday.
Additionally, the team declined its team option on right-handed reliever Yusmeiro Petit. Gonzalez's option is worth $12 million for next season.
In 2016 Gonzalez made 32 starts and posted an 11-11 record. The 31-year old southpaw had an ERA of 4.57 in 177.1 innings pitched with 171 strikeouts against 61 walks.
Since joining the Nationals in 2012, Gonzalez has been a model of reliability as he's made at least 27 starts in each of his five season's with the club, and he's had just one campaign in which he did not record 175 innings.
Petit appeared in 36 games for the Nationals in 2016 and went 3-5 with a 4.50 ERA over 62.0 innings pitched.
Petit's buyout will cost the Nationals $500,000.
