After placing the exclusive franchise tag on Kirk Cousins and beginning what seems like serious contract negotiations, the odds of the Redskins trading their quarterback seem lower than a month ago. Still, if there was to be a trade partner, the most logical landing spot would be San Francisco.

The 49ers don't have a QB. (Seriously, they don't have a quarterback on their roster.) Their new coach, Kyle Shanahan, was with the Redskins when Cousins was drafted. Their new coach's father, Mike Shanahan, has repeatedly gushed over Cousins' talent and moxie. And the Niners hold the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft.

The second overall pick is a big asset to dangle in possible trade talks, and it seems like new San Francisco GM John Lynch would consider doing just that.

"The great thing is I have the No. 2 pick -- we have the No. 2 pick -- and a ton of options because of that at our disposal," Lynch told reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine.

It's hard to say what a trade for Cousins would look like, but it's clear the No. 2 pick would need to be involved. It's also clear the new regime in San Francisco wants to land not just a place holder at QB, but somebody they can win games with.

"Free agency is something that we’re examining a lot of guys," he said. "Other options as well. So both Kyle [Shanahan] and I from the start, that’s one thing we’ve talked a lot about in our discussions. I'd love to tell you that strong safety, free safety -- that position you have to have and I believe it's important, but the quarterback position is one you have to hit on, and we’re looking to do that."

Lynch talked about the crop of rookie quarterbacks, some that the Niners met with in Indianapolis, and also said he would not close the door on the return of Colin Kaepernick. It's hard to think, however, that a rookie QB or Kaepernick could deliver the results of Cousins, who last season nearly threw for 5,000 yards.

Plenty of options for San Francisco, but a good quarterback is hard to come by.
