For the second straight season, Kirk Cousins lives on the edge of free agency. Speculation swirls about what the Redskins might do with their passer, whether that means another franchise tag, a wild card trade scenario, or the ever elusive long-term contract.
A multi-year deal for Cousins could allow the passer to be more comfortable as the Redskins leader, Cousins said on ESPN980 on Thursday. The QB added that it's not up to him, however, and that the Redskins front office needs to figure out their offer.
Washington team president Bruce Allen doesn't see the concern. Speaking to ESPN980 on Friday, Allen remained optimistic that a Cousins deal would get done.
In fact, Allen said it's obvious the team supports their quarterback, despite last year's franchise tag and the growing uncertainty so far this offseason. Asked if any of the 'Skins most important decision makers don't think Cousins is their best option at QB, Allen was clear. Mostly.
"No," he said. "If anyone went to all of our games the last few years, you would say that [Kirk] has obviously played well and is getting better. So there's no one that I know at Redskins Park. Now, maybe there's a night guard watchman you're talking about who didn't go to any of the games? Possibly."
Night watchman aside, it sounds like there are no Cousins detractors involved in the Redskins biggest decision since the trade for Robert Griffin III in 2012. That runs contrary to some previous reports that suggested a rift on Cousins in the 'Skins front office.
When Allen talked about getting a deal done with Cousins, both with ESPN980 and last week in Mobile, he made similar upbeat claims.
"I don’t think it’s as complicated as everyone wants to make it. And we’ll get together with his agent, and I’m sure we’ll come to an agreement."
If Redskins fans are scoring at home, Allen says everybody at Redskins Park wants Cousins as the QB, and getting the deal done shouldn't be complicated. Still, don't hold your breath.
