Starting Redskins safety Duke Ihenacho could be headed to injured reserve with a fractured and dislocated wrist.
Ihenacho suffered the injury during the second quarter of the Redskins’ 17-10 season opening loss to the Dolphins. After making a tackle, he came over to the sideline holding the wrist and immediately headed to the locker room.
The injury will require surgery, according to coach Jay Gruden, and it will sideline him for six to eight weeks.
“We’ll have to decide whether to put him on IR or not,” said Gruden when asked about the injury today. He indicated that both the regular injured reserve designation, which would put Ihenacho out for the season, and short-term IR, which would sideline him for at least eight weeks.
Trenton Robinson got most of the snaps at strong safety after Ihenacho left the game. Gruden said that Robinson, veteran Jeron Johnson, and rookie Kyshoen Jarrett would be in the mix to replace Ihenacho.
If Ihenacho does end up on injured reserve it will be his second stint there in as many seasons. The played in three games last year before hitting IR with a foot injury.
