Redskins roster projection--offense
RICHMOND—The Redskins have completed training camp and they have their first preseason game under their belts. Let’s take another look at who is likely to make the 53-man roster after the cut is final on September 2.
Players I have making the roster who are new to the organization in 2017 are in italics. Rookies are also in bold.
Starter: Kirk Cousins
Backups: Colt McCoy, Nate Sudfeld
I am very close to putting Sudfeld on the bubble. I don’t think that much was expected of him this year but he has shown very little progress since his rookie year. If your developmental quarterback isn’t developing, what’s the point in keeping him around? But for now, I think he stays.
Running backs (4)
Starter: Rob Kelley
Backups: Samaje Perine, Chris Thompson, Mack Brown
I go back and forth about Brown. He certainly is worthy of a roster spot and he is a willing contributor on special teams. But do they want a ninth offensive lineman? I removed Matt Jones from the bubble designation. His chances seem to get worse week by week.
Wide receivers (6)
Starters: Josh Doctson, Terrelle Pryor, Jamison Crowder (slot)
Backups: Maurice Harris, Ryan Grant, Robert Davis
Bubble: Brian Quick
It appears that Davis is solidifying his roster spot. He led the team in targets against the Ravens and he is getting a lot of passes thrown his way in practice. That said, I’m not so sure that Quick is not going to make it. Harris (knee) hasn’t practiced since early in camp but he probably is safe.
Tight ends (4)
Starter: Jordan Reed
Backups: Vernon Davis, Niles Paul, Jeremy Sprinkle
Bubble: Derek Carrier
Concern lingers about Reed’s toe injury but not to the point where anyone thinks that he will remain on the PUP list at the start of the season. I still think that Sprinkle will stay despite having problems gaining traction in camp.
Offensive line (8)
Starters (left to right): Trent Williams, Shawn Lauvao, Spencer Long, Brandon Scherff, Morgan Moses
Backups: Ty Nsekhe, Kyle Kalis, Chase Roullier
Bubble: Vinston Painter, Arie Kouandjio, John Kling
In the first practice after the Ravens game, Kalis, an undrafted rookie out of Michigan, is still lining up with the second unit and Kouandjio is with the third. That is handwriting on the wall in big, bold letters. They could well keep Painter and go with nine offensive linemen, which has been the norm in recent years. That would mean going with three tight ends or running backs.
The numbers: 25 players, five rookies, a total of six new to the team.
