Need to Know: McCoy wants to return to Redskins, almost certainly will want a raise

Here is what you need to know on this Wednesday, December 17, three days before the Washington Redskins host the Philadelphia Eagles.

Three and out—

1. Yesterday many fans and professional journalists took a tweet that paraphrased comments that Jay Gruden made about Robert Griffin III and blew it up, saying that Gruden threw Griffin under the bus. I quickly transcribed the full quote from Gruden and posted it on Facebook. Anyone who read it realized that Gruden said nothing that could be taken as a shot at Griffin. Folks, don’t overreact to tweets, especially ones without quotation marks. Get the context before you react. I know its hard sometimes because we want instant analysis and then we want to be able to give out say instantly. But sometimes taking a deep breath can save you a lot of angst as a fan.

2. Gruden did not give an injury update today because he wasn’t required to. And it was hard to tell who was participating in the walkthrough because nobody was wearing a helmet. Trent Williams came in somewhat late in the proceedings, as the media was leaving. He’s obviously the most important injury to keep an eye on this week. If he can’t go it might not matter that Griffin is starting at quarterback.

3. If Brandon Meriweather can’t play, we’ll see Phillip Thomas make his third straight start at strong safety. Gruden liked what the saw out of the second-year player. “I thought Phillip made a couple strides toward the better,” he said. “It’s good to see him run around there and make some plays. He’s a very good tackler – sound tackler.”

Out: After the announcement that he has been placed on injured reserve, Colt McCoy was asked about his future with the Redskins. “I certainly feel like I’m a fit here,” McCoy said. “We’ll talk about that as we move forward." Translation: The Redskins had better come up with some money. He made the veteran minimum of $730,000 this year and if he’s going to be in the mix to be the starter they are going to have to come up with more than that. He won’t be looking for huge money but most backups who could be starters are in the $2-$3 million per year range with some guaranteed money. In a league desperate for quarterbacks that’s the going rate. You’d have to think that the Redskins will be McCoy’s first choice but he won’t give a hometown discount to a place that has been “home” for barely a year.

Today’s schedule: Practice 10:30; Jay Gruden and Jim Haslett news conferences, player availability after practice, approx. 12:30

Days until: Eagles @ Redskins 3; Cowboys @ Redskins 11; 2015 NFL Draft 135

2018 Power Rankings: Patriots prove they still got it, Rams remain top dog

In a thriller in Foxboro, the Patriots handed Kansas City its first loss of the season.

It wasn't pretty but the Rams slipped past the Broncos to remain the lone unbeaten in the NFL.

Remember when the Lions beat New England on Sunday Night Football and folks were ready to bury the Patriots? Yeah... how did that 'hot take' work out?

Will the real Redskins please stand up? A win over the Panthers moved the Skins up three spots. Give the Redskins this, they are consistently unpredictable.

The Ravens are on the rise and Marcus Mariota is happy the Titans won't have to play Baltimore again.

So the Cowboys have an offense now? Or does Jacksonville not have an elite defense anymore?

And the Bears let Brock Osweiler throw for 380 yards. Yes. You read that correct. 380 yards.

How far will the Bears drop because of that dreadful defensive performance?

The Kerrigan family is about to make a big-time addition to its roster.

Ryan and his wife, Jessica, already have two very, VERY, very, very cute bulldogs in their household.

But on Tuesday, the two announced in separate Instagram posts that Jessica is 18 weeks pregnant and that a third human Kerrigan will arrive in 2019.

"Can I eat dis sign aftur da picturr iz over?" George the bulldog said when reached for comment on the news.

"How did dey gett such a smawl jerzey for da baby alreddy?" Franklin the other bulldog added.

This is all very wonderful.

Come next March, the world is about to get a little precious-er.
