The Cowboys spent all day debating between taking the safe pick with the fourth selection in the draft in cornerback Jalen Ramsey or with the flashy selection in running back Ezekiel Elliott.
The predictable happened. They went with the glamor pick and went with Elliott.
Conventional wisdom is that the top five is too early to take a running back because quality runners can be found in later rounds. Elliott certainly adds a dimension that the Cowboys don’t have with his ability to run up the middle, around the edges, and to catch passes out of the backfield.
The Redskins were 26th in rushing defense last year. They hope to improve that in the draft but for now and improved rushing game in Dallas is not good news for them. Running backs typically learn quickly so Elliott could well be quite productive by the time the Cowboys come to Washington in Week 2.
Former Redskins running back Alfred Morris has to be wondering if he made the right move in signing with Dallas as a free agent. He was looking to share playing time with holdover back Darren McFadden. Now there is a crowd of three in the backfield and Morris could be on odd man out.
