The first round is over. Now a look at round two plus third round picks for the Redskins and Ravens.
TEN T.J. Clemmings, OT, Pittsburgh - Now that Marcus Mariota is under center, the Titans know they must shore up their right tackle spot.
TB Jake Fisher, OT, Oregon - Drafting a quarterback is one thing, protecting him is another. The Bucs' o-line needs upgrades all over the place.
OAK Eddie Goldman, DT, Florida State -The Raiders struck gold with 2014 first-round LB stud Kahlil Mack. Now more help for the front-seven.
JAX Jaelen Strong, WR, Arizona State - Receiver isn't a primary need, but the 6-foot-3 Strong is tremendous value in this spot.
NYJ Randy Gregory, DE, Nebraska - Jets could use a quarterback and a perimeter pass rusher. Do they take Gregory and his baggage or Baylor QB Bryce Petty?
WAS Jordan Phillips, DT, Oklahoma - More on this pick below.
CHI Eli Harold, DE/OLB, Virginia - Chicago's defensive needs in order: Pass rusher, linebacker, secondary. Harold had seven sacks for the Cavaliers last season.
NYG Landon Collins, S Alabama - Giants need safeties in the worst way especially with Antrell Rolle bolting for the Bears.
STL Dorial Green-Beckham, WR, Oklahoma - The 6-foot-5 Green-Beckham is a freaky prospect with size, speed, first round talent and character concerns.
ATL Maxx Williams, TE, Minnesota - Losing Tony Gonzalez left Matt Ryan without a viable tight end option last season.
CLE Bryce Petty, QB, Baylor - This just in: The Browns need a quarterback. Might need to trade ahead of the Jets for this one.
NO Devin Smith, WR, Ohio State - Smith averaged a staggering 28.2 yards on 33 receptions with 12 touchdowns for the national title-winning Buckeyes this past season.
MIN Donovan Smith, OT, Penn State - Consider this a strong offseason for the Vikings if they can surround quarterback Teddy Bridgewater with receiver and offensive line help.
SF Benardrick McKinney, ILB, Mississippi State - Everyone knows about the dual retirements of inside linebackers Patrick Willis and Chris Borland.
MIA Jalen Collins, CB, LSU - After tabbing a needed receiver in the first round, the Dolphins can address their inside linebacker or secondary concerns in round two.
SD Carl Davis, DT, Iowa - The middle of San Diego's defensive line needs a boost.
KC Sammie Coates, WR, Auburn - The Chiefs need more targets beyond free agent Jeremy Maclin.
BUF Brett Hundley, QB, UCLA - No doubt Buffalo could take a QB seeing as they only have E.J Manuel and Matt Cassel.
HOU Devin Funchess, WR/TE, Michigan - Andre Johnson is in Indianapolis, meaning the Texas need another receiver to pair with DeAndre Hopkins.
PHI Eric Rowe, CB/S, Utah The Eagles need help all over the secondary. Rowe played all over the place with the Utes.
CIN Owamagbe Odighizuwa, DE, UCLA - Bengals add depth with an injury-prone 6-foot-3, 265-pounder blessed with pass rushing ability and a high motor.
DET Michael Bennett, DT, Ohio State - The interior of the Lions defensive line was a major strength. Key would is was.
ARI Eric Kendricks, ILB, UCLA - The Cardinals are always a disaster covering tight end largely because their inside linebackers are terrible at that task.
PIT Quinten Rollins, CB, Miami (Ohio) - No doubt the Steelers will add bodies for a decaying secondary.
CAR Ameer Abdullah, RB, Nebraska - The Panthers finally parted ways with DeAngelo Williams so here comes a new tag-team partner for Jonathan Stewart.
BAL P.J. Williams, CB, Florida State - Ravens addressed wide receiver need in the first round. Now address secondary in round two.
DEN A.J. Cann, G, South Carolina - Broncos have uncertainty at left guard, tackle and tight end.
DAL Tevin Coleman, RB, Indiana - The Cowboys aren't entering the season with only Darren McFadden at running back, right?
IND Preston Smith, DE, Mississippi State - Ideally Colts add offensive line help, but pass rushing duo of Robert Mathis and newly-signed Trent Cole aren't kids anymore
GB Denzel Perryman, ILB, Miami - Green Bay finished 22nd against the run. Blah inside linebackers didn't help.
SEA Hroniss Grasu, C, Oregon - The Seahawks acquired tight end Jimmy Graham by trading center Max Unger.
NE Ronald Darby, CB, Florida State - In case you haven't heard, corners Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner left in free agency.
TB Nate Orchard , DE/OLB, Utah - Orchard set a school-record with 18.5 in his final campaign with the Utes.
TEN Mario Edwards, DE, Florida State - The Titans addressed their pass rushing needs in free agency. Now time to add a big body up front.
JAX Paul Dawson, ILB, TCU - Dawson recorded 135 tackles this past season for the Horned Frogs and had eight games with 10-plus stops.
OAK Grady Jarrett, DT, Clemson - Needs suggests the Raiders add a corner. The board demands Oakland selecting the run-stuffing Jarrett.
WAS Duke Johnson, RB, Miami (Fl.) - Tempted to go with a defensive back, but value and need meet with the Hurricanes’ all-time leader in rushing and all-purpose yards.
BAL Clive Walford, TE, Miami (Fl.) - Certainly cannot count on Dennis Pitta remaining healthy. The third-team AP All-American can help as a receiver and blocker.
- As for the Redskins second-round selection:
- Nose tackle Terrance Knighton only signed a one-year deal this off-season, which I believe is something Redskins GM Scot McCloughan mentioned during his press conference Monday in addition to wanting tough nasty guys (a.k.a Brandon Scherff). Also, per NFL.com, the comparison for the 6-foot-5, 329-pound Phillips is...Knighton.
- The Redskins could certainly use safety depth, but not sure the run-stuffing, slow-footed Landon Collins is ultimately the right fit. Close call.
- Now doubt the Redskins are pondering whether they can take on the edge rushing Randy Gregory's off-the-field concerns and whether he can take on blockers. They didn't land a pass rusher in the first and that need remains. Virginia's Eli Harold is another edge rusher option.
- Redskins GM Scot McCloughan made it clear this week he wants more draft picks. Trading down from 38 is his best hope at this point. Hope QB-needy team are desperate to move up.
Top 5 guesses for 38: 1) Trade down 2) NT Jordan Phillips 3) OLB Eli Harold 4) CB Jalen Collins 5) WR Jaelen Strong
