The first candidate for a new general manager for the Redskins comes from way out of left field.
According to a tweet from Adam Schefter of ESPN, Mike Mayock, draft analyst for NFL Network, is a candidate:
NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock has emerged as a candidate to become Washington’s general manager, sources tell @FieldYates and me.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 10, 2017
Schefter added that the Redskins are unlikely to hire a general manager until after the draft and that Mark Dominik, a former Bucs GM and current ESPN analyst, also is under consideration.
Mayock played in the NFL for the Giants from 1982-1983. He has been doing TV work for the NFL Network and for ABC since 2005. While his knowledge about the NFL draft is impressive, he has never held a front office type of job. However, other teams have reached out to him about doing such work. Speaking on the radio in 2010 he said that four teams had offered him front office jobs but “it wasn’t the right time”.
Is now the right time for Mayock and is he the right fit for the Redskins?
