Going into this offseason 16 Redskins players are eligible for free agency. The names at the top of the list carry the most importance for the team in 2017 and beyond, and no contract decision will be bigger than quarterback Kirk Cousins.
Washington should have around $60 million available under the salary cap, so plenty of cash to spend, but lots of questions to answer.
What happens, or doesn't, with Cousins will likely set the path for many other 'Skins free agents. If Scot McCloughan and the Washington brass can agree to a long-term deal with their quarterback, how much money remains available for receivers Pierre Garçon and, or, DeSean Jackson? If McCloughan places the franchise tag on Cousins, then what money is left?
Cousins, Garçon and Jackson are absolutely the three biggest names to watch among the 'Skins free agents, but what about guys like Chris Baker and Vernon Davis? Remember Junior Galette? These are all players with expiring contracts.
Don't forget, the Redskins defense struggled mightily in 2016. Rebuilding that unit should be the priority this offseason, and to do that right, money needs to be available.
