After a busy free agency period, a draft in which 10 new players were added and the acquisition of 13 undrafted college players, the Redskins look much different than they did last December. So in the coming weeks, Insiders Tarik El-Bashir and Rich Tandler will break down the revamped roster, position-by-position, as offseason activities ramp up and depth charts come into focus.
Position: Offensive tackle
On the roster: Brandon Scherff, Trent Williams, Tom Compton, Morgan Moses, Brey Cook, Takoby Cofield
Likely to make the 53: Williams, Scherff, Moses
Comment: Williams has been to three straight Pro Bowls so he is set at left tackle. Although Scot McCloughan has said that Scherff will have to compete for the right tackle job it’s difficult to see him not lining up there against the Dolphins in Week 1.
A year ago Moses was thought by many to be the right tackle of the future. But the 2014 third-round pick struggled to adapt to the NFL game and then a Lisfranc injury he suffered late in the year has hampered his preparation for this season. There has been talk that he could move inside to guard but at this point that is just fan and media speculation. Assuming he is healthy and remains at tackle he appears to be headed for a swing tackle role.
Battling for a job: Compton, Cook, Cofield
Comment: With the addition of Scherff, Compton, who started the last nine games at right tackle last year, is squarely on the roster bubble. At 6-5 and just over 300 lb. he was drafted for the Mike Shanahan zone-blocking scheme. It remains to be seen how well he can adjust to the emphasis on power blocking that McCloughan, Jay Gruden, and Bill Callahan are bringing to the team. They may choose to go with just one backup swing tackle and that could leave Compton on the outside looking in.
Both Cook (6-5, 317) and Cofield (6-4, 310) have size for power blocking but both of the rookie free agents are very raw. According to one report Cofield got a $25,000 signing bonus, quite sizeable for an undrafted player, so he was one lineman that McCloughan wanted to bring in. You never know until they get out on the practice field but it seems likely that both of these players will be hoping for spots on the practice squad.
