That thud you heard was the sound of the Redskins offense losing some of its focus. While the results could prove to be minor, when Jay Gruden announced that tight end Jordan Reed entered the NFL concussion protocol this week, it was understandably a big wave through the organization.
Reed leads the Redskins with 33 catches and 316 yards and is tied for the team lead with two TD receptions. It's not too much to say that the tight end is the focal point of Washington's offense, and QB Kirk Cousins' favorite target.
"He's a very talented player, he's shown that," Cousins said of Reed. "We love to have our best players out on the field with us, but like I said, you understand that it's a part of playing in the league that injuries are going to happen. Guys are going to be in and out."
Only in his fourth season, Reed has never played a complete 16 game schedule in his first three years in the league. While it's possible Reed plays Sunday against the Eagles, the NFL protocol dictates a number of steps be taken for clearance should a concussion be determined.
"I'm not considering it a concussion until we get all the results," head coach Jay Gruden said. "He just had some symptoms, it doesn't mean it is [a concussion]. We just want to make sure we take the right steps."
Another concussion would certainly be troubling for Reed, who has dealt with head injuries in college and in the NFL. Gruden said he doesn't think in terms of multiple concussions for Reed, and that the protocol dictates what happens next for a concussed player, while the players know what Reed means to the offense.
"Hopefully it’s not too serious, hopefully it’s just protocol," DeSean Jackson said. "Hopefully we'll have him for Sunday. We definitely need him, he’s a big part of what we do."
For the Redskins, the signing of Vernon Davis this past offseason looks like a prudent move now. Davis has 10 catches for 94 yards this season, numbers that don't stand out. Watching Davis, however, and the 11-year veteran has looked agile and like he has plenty left. Depending the results for Reed, Davis could be in line for a much bigger role.
