Redskins rookie linebacker Su’a Cravens is from Los Angeles and he went to college at USC so he could be forgiven if he wasn’t too familiar with the history of the rivalry between his NFL team and the team they play on Sunday, the Cowboys.
And, when asked about it on Wednesday he initially gave the old, boring veteran line.
“To me, it’s just another game,” he said. “I can’t make it bigger than what it is. It’s a very important game, it’s a divisional game, and we have to win. But, ultimately we just have to go out and worry about us.”
But then he added some spice to it. As it turns out, he knows some of the history of Redskins-Cowboys series through his mother.
“I’m familiar with it,” he said. “My mom is actually a Cowboys fan so I’m not talking to her this week.”
Not talking to mom?
“I’m serious, she called me this morning,” he said. “I haven’t spoken to her. She called me, I hit silent.”
So he hit the ignore button on mom? Yes, he confirmed, he went there.
And he tweaked his mother even more by talking to his father, who apparently does not share the same rooting interest.
“My dad called, I said, hey, what’s up pop? She was kind of jealous,” he said.
If Cravens keeps this up he will soon become a favorite of Redskins fans, even though he might not have favorite son status from his mother’s point of view at the next family gathering.
