Redskins owner Dan Snyder offered a statement on the passing of Steelers legendary owner Dan Rooney, who was 84 years old.
"I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ambassador Dan Rooney," Snyder said. "Dan was always available and eager to help everyone. He was an icon in our league and a great friend to our game, and his immeasurable impact and presence will be felt for decades to come. I will dearly miss his counsel and his friendship."
Rooney was one of the most respected owners in the NFL, and was a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He was best known for his work in labor relations for the league, and for his advocacy for diversity in the NFL. The "Rooney Rule" was a rule he lobbied for that requires teams to interview minority candidates for coaching positions.
Rooney was also a trusted ally of NFL commissioners Roger Goodell, Paul Tagliabue and Pete Rozelle.
