The Redskins will gather for their last week of practice before training camp, with a long break between this week and the late July arrival of training camp. Jay Gruden will expect his team to get a lot done during minicamp so the squad can hit the ground running in Richmond.
Three questions for the team for minicamp:
- This is mandatory - For the past three weeks, the Redskins have been working together during OTAs. Those sessions are optional for players, and Trent Williams, Jordan Reed and Matt Jones all chose not to attend. Minicamp, however, is mandatory. Expect Reed and Williams to attend. Jones will be the biggest question for the team. Gruden made clear he expects Jones to be with the team. The 2015 third-round pick fell to the bottom of the running back depth chart, and word is he's unhappy with his situation. Attending, or skipping, minicamp will provide some clarity on Jones' status.
- Doctson vs. Grant - Much is expected out of second-year wideout Josh Doctson. He missed almost all of his rookie season due to an Achilles injury, and so far, has been working with the second team during 11v11 drills. Ryan Grant has taken on the role of starting "Z" receiver, but odds are Doctson will push for that position. If he stays healthy.
- Nickel corner - The Redskins overhauled secondary, with new safeties in Su'a Cravens and D.J. Swearinger, should help the unit improve in 2017. Often, though, the Redskins play in their nickel defense, which means an additional cornerback takes the field to line up with Bashaud Breeland and Josh Norman. Kendall Fuller seems to have the inside track on the inside job, and the second-year man still has much potential after a rough rookie season. Quinton Dunbar seems better suited for the outside, and don't forget that Breeland excels in slot coverage as well. This job likely won't be settled until the preseason, or even Week 1, and could change once 2017 third-round pick Fabian Moreau gets on the field.
