Redskins

The final organized workout of May is in the books, and while the Redskins offense struggled in spots, there was plenty to notice from the practice bubble in Ashburn. Below are three key takeaways from Wednesday's action.

  1. Two to tango - Kirk Cousins had built rapport with Pierre Garçon and DeSean Jackson playing with the receivers for years. Both wideouts are gone, and that production will need to come from somewhere else. Free agent addition Terrelle Pryor seems like the clear choice to step into the vacancy. Throughout the OTA session, Cousins looked for Pryor, particularly during a successful two-minute drill towards the end of the session. Cousins and Pryor don't have years of experience working together, but the duo is working hard on building trust and an understanding of each other's game quickly.
  2. Uh, about that depth - Trent Williams and Ty Nsekhe did not take part in Wednesday's session, which meant the Redskins only had Morgan Moses of their top three tackles. The absences were obvious, as the Redskins outside linebackers repeatedly got to the quarterback in team drills. Barring an extreme set of injuries this should not be too alarming - few, if any, NFL teams can go four-deep at tackle with confidence - this is not an overly pressing issue.
  3. Take it easy - Forgive Redskins fans for freaking out when reports of Josh Doctson sitting out team drills during May OTAs emerge, but the fear is understandable. Doctson's struggles as a rookie are well-documented, he played less than 40 snaps all last season. Jay Gruden was quick to point out that Doctson's rest "had nothing to do" (full video above) with the Achilles injury from last year. Even then, Doctson needs the work with Cousins, much like Pryor, to fine-tune their relationship and route running. Washington is smart to rest their second-year wideout if he needs it, especially after last season, but the rest raises questions and anxieties about a player the Redskins need to produce this fall.
