Over the next few weeks, Insiders Tarik El-Bashir and Rich Tandler will take another position-by-position look at the Redskins’ 2016 depth chart as the team enjoys some R&R ahead of training camp. Some positions are easy to handicap. Others are have moving parts and, thus, are more complex. This much, however, is not in question: A player is not on the 53-man roster until it's finalized in early September. So who’s in? And who’s in trouble?
Up today… Position: Right guard
On the roster: Brandon Scherff, Nila Kasitati
Likely to make the 53: Scherff
So you come into the league, change positions about a month before the start of the season, play all but one snap during the season, allow just two sacks and do a solid job run blocking. Then you go into the next season with more, much more, expected of you.
Such is the life of Scherff. When you are playing guard after being the fifth overall pick in the draft you are expected to be great, not just solid or competent. Offensive coordinator Sean McVay sees him as a player on the rise.
“Well, the thing that’s encouraging about Brandon is when you look at what he was able to accomplish last year, first time transitioning inside to playing guard, and I thought he showed continuous improvement throughout the course of the year,” McVay said earlier this month. “He’s a conscientious guy – really tough. I think he competes well in both phases – excellent athleticism.”
He has a very high bar. If he doesn’t merit at least strong Pro Bowl consideration some will call it a disappointment. That may be unreasonable but such is the nature of the game.
Battling for a job: Kasitati
