Wizards star John Wall wants Paul George in a Wizards uniform. He told Marc Spears of ESPN's the Undefeated that he's been lobbying the Pacers All-Star to ask for a trade to Washington.
George has made it clear to Indiana that he will not stay with the team once he becomes a free agent next summer. While his reported preference is to become a Laker, Wall seems to have sensed an opportunity to build a contender for the Eastern Conference crown in Washington.
"I am talking to some guys – Paul," Wall said while attending the NBA Awards. "I know his ultimate goal of where he wants to be. I'm trying to see if we can make something happen."
Spears reports that sources have told him the Wizards have engaged the Pacers in trade talks for George, but nothing is imminent.
Wall laid out the case for adding the four-time All-Star as the best possible avenue to compete with LeBron James and the Cavaliers:
Look at our team. We are one piece away. We have the point guard, we have the shooting guard, we have the center, we have the power forward. Our 3-man [Otto Porter Jr.] did great for us. You can't take nothing away from what he did. But [George] is a guy that can guard LeBron and go back at LeBron. It's a piece that you're going to need to win. If you don't have a guy who can do that, you don't have a chance. ...
You got to add another star. You got to add another piece. You got to have three guys. And that's what it's looking like.
Porter broke out for the Wizards last season as one of the league's best three-point shooters, but has not yet reached All-Star level. The team has indicated it would like to bring Porter back, but the price is likely to be steep.
The Wizards star said he and George have a friendship that he's been able to draw on for these conversations, but it's sure what will happen at this point.
"Right now, I don't know. Indiana has all the rights to do whatever they want. And if he goes where he doesn't want to go, he doesn't have to sign next year."
