Anthony Davis, Russell Westbrook, Derrick Rose are among the biggest names in the NBA. All-Stars LaMarcus Aldridge, Marc Gasol, Draymond Green are entering free agency this summer. The connection among all these players and around 50 more including Joe Johnson, Al Horford, Brook Lopez and Wizards forward Kris Humphries is Arn Tellem, one of the influential sports agents in NBA history.
That connection is on the verge of giving up the agent business for a high profile role with the Detroit Pistons organization, according to a report from Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski:
Wasserman Media Group's Arn Tellem, one of the most powerful and prominent player agents in the history of the NBA, is finalizing an agreement to become vice chairman of Palace Sports and Entertainment, the company that owns the Detroit Pistons, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Tellem will answer directly to billionaire owner Tom Gores, but will not become the ultimate authority on the Pistons' basketball decisions, sources said. That responsibility will remain with president and coach Stan Van Gundy, who signed a five-year, $35 million deal a year ago.
Wojnarowski added that Tellum "will largely become the Pistons' ownership face in Michigan" with Gores focusing on his primary, non-basketball business. At this point, Van Gundy and general manager Jeff Bower run the Pistons' front office and basketball operations. However, don't expect Tellum to simply stand on the side silently, which makes for a very interesting dynamic considering the deal Van Gundy signed just last year.
Detroit;s 2014-15 campaign began miserably, which led to the organization cutting ties with Josh Smith despite owing the forward around $26 million after the season. Last in the Central Divisions, the Pistons finished 32-50. Among the player personnel decisions for the team this coming offseason include how best to handle their two biggest free agents, former Georgetown big man Greg Monroe and guard Reggie Jackson.
The Pistons can make move in the suspect Eastern Conference if they can add the right pieces around center Andre Drummond, shooter Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and point guard Brandon Jennings. Tellum surely has some thoughts on that matter, not to mention a rolodex that includes many of the top players in the league.
