The blockbuster trade between the Celtics and Cavs centering around Kyrie Irving and Isaiah Thomas was apparently so big it affected the Washington Wizards' odds to win the 2017-18 NBA title.
The sportsbook Bovada released new betting odds for the NBA season and the Cavs and Celtics weren't the only team in the East that changed. So did the Wizards, who saw their chances drop from 40/1 to 50/1.
Here is how it all has shaken out following the trade:
If the number is in red, that means the odds got worse from the last Bovada release. Blue means they got better. As you see, the Wizards dropped and so did the Milwaukee Bucks, while the Sixers improved their standing. Why the Wizards dropped is anyone's guess. Evidently Bovada sees the Cavs and Celtics as having further solidified their standing as the top two teams in the East.
Based on that measure, sportsbooks appear to think the Celtics were better served in the short-term by this deal, seeing how their odds got better while the Cavs' got worse. The Wizards, meanwhile, remain with the eighth-best odds in the NBA and the third-best odds in the Eastern Conference.
