Countless hours have been spent around the water cooler debating and ranking the best teams, players, and coaches in DC. But what about which team rocks the best uniforms? The burgundy and gold may the most popular uniform in the area, but with the recent success of both the Nationals and Capitals, theres been a rise of red on the streets. But how do the uniforms of the Redskins, Nationals, Capitals, and Wizards stack up against other franchises? Paul Lukas, of Uni Watch and ESPN.com, released his Uni Watch Power Rankings, which ranks the uniforms of every MLB, NBA, NHL, and NFL team, from 1-122. Lukas bases his rankings on a teams full set, so home, away, and alternate uniforms are all taken into consideration. The rankings are totally subjective and favor tradition, so many DC fans may not agree with where their teams are ranked.
Included for each DC team is their overall ranking, league ranking, and Lukas explanation for their ranking. Well start with the Capitals, who rank near the bottom of the list. Washington CapitalsOverall ranking: 107th NHL ranking: 27th Explanation: Yeesh, all those apron-string stripes and sleeve panels -- way too busy. And the shoulder logo has always looked like an eagle being impaled on an oil can. The throwback alternate helps, but it's too little, too late.Washington Nationals Overall ranking: 87th MLB ranking: 26th Explanation: Much like the team itself, this uniform program has made some progress. But the home and red jerseys would look better if the number moved up to align with the W, the star-spangled jersey would look better if they locked it in a closet and pretended it never existed, and the whole package still feels a teeny bit generic. They're getting there, though Washington Redskins Overall ranking: 62nd NFL ranking: 17th Explanation: The Skins look great when they wear those flashy gold pants (which have their own Twitter feed!), they look OK when they wear the burgundy pants, and they should really give the white pants the heave-ho. The jerseys and helmet are OK, but the whole package is starting to feel a bit dated.Washington WizardsOverall ranking: 31st NBA ranking: 6th Explanation: The Bullets live again! OK, not quite, but this is a close enough facsimile. Kudos to owner Ted Leonsis for bringing back an updated version of the old striped design, and to the league and adidas for executing it so nicely. One of the better uni-related success stories of recent years. So what say you DC sports fans? Do the Wizards have the citys best uniforms? Let us know what you think!
