When is the 2020 Kentucky Derby? Start time, pole positions

Jockey Manuel Franco pumps his fist after winning the 152nd running of the Belmont Stakes aboard Tiz the Law

There will be no spectators in the stands for the 146th running of the Kentucky Derby, but the race will go on and there’s a heavy favorite to finish on top.

In a rare change of events, the Kentucky Derby is the second leg of the Triple Crown after the coronavirus pandemic forced it to be postponed from its original date of May 2. The Belmont Stakes, which are normally held third, kicked off the Triple Crown in June with Tiz the Law winning by four lengths. The Preakness Stakes will finish off the three-leg series Oct. 3.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2020 Kentucky Derby.

Though the Belmont Stakes, typically the longest leg of the Triple Crown, were shortened from 1 1/5 miles to 1 1/8 miles to account for 3-year-old horses having to race after little training for months, the Kentucky Derby will be its usual length of 1 1/4 miles.
