Top prospect James Wiseman hasn't worked out with Timberwolves

In a bit of surprising news, it turns out the Minnesota Timberwolves, who hold the No. 1 pick, have not worked out Memphis big man James Wiseman, or had much contact with him at all.

Wiseman, considered one of the draft's three-best prospects along with LaMelo Ball and Anthony Edwards, dropped that news on Monday while meeting with the media ahead of next week's 2020 NBA Draft. He has worked out with the Warriors, who hold the second pick, and the Hornets, who are picking third, but not the Timberwolves.

So, what does this mean? Well, it could effectively confirm reporting from ESPN's Brian Windhorst earlier this month that Wiseman was avoiding the Timberwolves. Wiseman didn't specify to media that it was his call, but Windhorst suggested Wiseman didn't want to play for Minnesota because of Karl-Anthony Towns and the potential redundancy at center.

Essentially, it could not be the Timberwolves' call. That would make sense, as Minnesota has plenty of reason to check out Wiseman, even if they too don't see the fit.

For one, they can cross-check their scouting reports and make sure they aren't missing out on the next great center. But it would also make sense to at least have other teams think you're interested because someone might really like him and want to trade up.

NBA fans may recall the 2017 draft when the Celtics had the No. 1 pick and everyone thought they were going to stay there and take Markelle Fultz. Philly really wanted him and traded up, while Boston moved back and got the better player in Jayson Tatum.

Either way, what this appears to confirm is that Wiseman is more likely to go second or third. If he lands with the Warriors, he could complement their core of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green well as an athletic rim-runner and shot-blocker. In Charlotte, he could be the high-upside potential franchise player they currently do not have.

Maybe the Timberwolves surprise and take Wiseman first overall, but it's looking very likely he goes second or third overall on Wednesday night.
