“Oh he’s got the Wall’s on, he’s gonna make this!” John Wall exclaimed in a referee jersey while officiating the 8th Annual Special Olympics Unified Basketball game.
The event, which brings Special Olympians from Washington, D.C. and Virginia chapters together for a basketball game, was officiated and coached by Washington Wizards and Mystics players, including Elena Delle Donne, Troy Brown Jr., Ariel Atkins and Ish Smith.
“I’m glad we had a good time with everybody. It was just so much fun," special olympian Calvin Johnson said.
“This game tonight was fantastic," president and CEO of Special Olympics DC Nicole Preston said. "Such great competitions, the players had an amazing time and this is all what it’s about, making inclusion in the community.”
Another Wizards player who volunteered his time was Mortiz "Mo" Wagner.
“It kind of reminds me of why I started playing basketball, because it connects so many different people from different backgrounds and different lives," Wagner said. "It’s a privilege. I’m honestly privileged to be here, able to spend some time with these kids and people in general it’s just super much fun.”
