Former Wizard and current Lakers point guard Russell Westbrook was having a rough night against the Kings Wednesday, so the jumbotron decided to have some fun with him.
The nine-time All-Star recorded just eight points to go along with 12 rebounds and six assists in a 125-116 loss in Sacramento. Westbrook shot a grotesque 2-for-14 in the game, and every time he missed, the Kings played "Cold as Ice" on the Golden 1 Center speakers.
The jumbotron later revealed that Westbrook was the "Ice-cold player of the game," further trolling him for his poor shooting.
Westbrook has not shot the ball well this year, especially the last three games. He's gone 8-for-40 from the floor and is averaging under eight points per game during that span. However, the Kings are hardly the team to be throwing stones, as Westbrook alluded to after the game.
“That’s funny,” Westbrook said. “I hope they played that the last 14 years, too. It’s funny they play it now. That’s cute.”
If the Kings can get on Westbrook for his shortcomings, he can do the same. The Kings haven't made the playoffs since 2006, before Westbrook even entered the league. Draft misses (Marvin Bagley over Luka Doncic), premature coaching firings (Mike Malone) and a slew of bad trades (Isaiah Thomas to the Suns), have left the Kings in perpetual misery.
Even with Westbrook and the Lakers struggling this season, they remain five games above the Kings in the West standings.
This seems to be a theme for the sports world in 2022. Former Giants head coach Joe Judge appeared to take a jab at the Washington Football Team for its sideline scuffle, but ultimately lost to Ron Rivera's group to finish the 2021 season 4-13. New York ended up firing Judge on Tuesday.
In this case, we unfortunately will have to wait to see the second act. The Lakers don't visit the Kings again this season, so Westbrook and the Kings' operations staff will have to cease fire for now.
