The Wizards have been focused on NBA assistants in their search for their next head coach, and it appears they have their eyes on a certain Mavericks assistant known for building relationships with players.

Per Marc Stein, the Wizards and Orlando Magic have requested permission to interview Dallas assistant Jamahl Mosley.

Mosley has been on staff with the Mavs since 2014 and was perceived to be a candidate to replace the departing Rick Carlisle as head coach. The team opted instead to hire Jason Kidd.

An assistant coach on multiple staffs since 2007, Mosley is well regarded around the league for his relationships with players. Dallas superstar Luka Doncic had a close relationship with Mosley and praised the 42-year-old coach after he filled in for Carlisle one night as acting head coach.

“He’s got the things that are needed for a head coach," Doncic said at the time. "He can be the head coach, for sure.”

Doncic's relationship with Mosley reportedly reached the point where Carlisle felt threatened by it before stepping away from the franchise and joining the Indiana Pacers.

Before his time in Dallas, Mosley spent four years with the Cavaliers from 2010-14 and five years with Denver as an assistant and player development staffer.
