Westbrook and Beal likely to sit vs. Nets

Wizards fans will have to wait at least another few days to see Russell Westbrook and Bradley Beal team up, as neither are expected to play this Sunday when Washington tips off their preseason against the Nets in Brooklyn.

Beal and Westbrook will still travel with the team and do some work pregame, per coach Scott Brooks. But they are unlikely to play and neither are Davis Bertans or Robin Lopez, who were delayed in joining the team for training camp.

"We will play it by ear with the rest of the guys. It’s going to be some good opportunities for some guys to play some pretty good minutes and get a good look," Brooks said.

The Wizards' next preseason game will be on Dec. 17 against the Detroit Pistons. That could be the debut of Westbrook in a Wizards uniform.

Rookie ninth overall pick Deni Avdija will play on Sunday despite dealing with a banged up knee earlier in the week. Brooks said he is back to 100 percent and will play around 18-to-20 minutes against the Nets.

The Wizards are clearly playing it safe with Beal and Westbrook, knowing they are about to begin a truncated regular season. It will just disappoint anyone who was looking forward to Westbrook facing off with Kevin Durant.

We will just have to wait until the regular season for that.
