Unseld Jr. a serious candidate for Magic head coach position

While the Wizards continue to search for their next head coach, the Orlando Magic have moved into the second round of interviews and have targeted Wes Unseld Jr. as a serious candidate.

That's according to the Athletic, which reported Thursday that Unseld Jr. had a second interview with Orlando. He is aiming to become a first-time head coach after serving on Michael Malone's staff in Denver since 2015. Unseld Jr. is the Nuggets' associate head coach.

Unseld Jr. has many connections to the Wizards and Washington, D.C. as a former assistant coach for the franchise, the son of the most decorated player in team history and as someone who grew up in the area. But Unseld Jr. was also an assistant coach for the Magic and more recently - while he was with the Wizards from 2005 to 2011, he spent 2012 to 2015 in Orlando under head coach Jacque Vaughn.

The Wizards have conducted their first round of interviews with several names having since been made public. Unseld Jr. wasn't one of them, though Washington's interest in him has been reported by the Denver Post.

Regardless of whether it's in Orlando or elsewhere, Unseld Jr. seems primed to get a head coaching job. He's been an NBA assistant for more than a decade, has a strong reputation around the league and has helped guide the Nuggets into perennial contenders.

Now it looks like there is a decent chance he will be hired by another team and possibly before the Wizards reach the end of their own search.
