Spanish fans celebrate in a fountain. About 300,000 people gathered in downtown Madrid after Spain defeated the Netherlands to win the World Cup on Sunday, July 11, 2010. It was the first time the soccer-proud country had ever won the event.
Yellow for Oranje
Spain's Xabi Alonso is kicked in the chest by the Netherlands' Nigel de Jong. de Jong was given a yellow card for the move as the Oranje drew eight yellow cards in the match, a record for the World Cup final.
Cody Cassidy, from Donalda, Alberta, wrestles a steer. Cassidy was competing in the Calgary Stampede on Sunday, July 11 in Calgary, Alberta. The annual event attracts more than one million visitors.
No more witnesses
Workers remove the giant banner of former Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James. The downtown Cleveland mural, a 10-story tall image with the phrase "We are all witnesses," required several days to remove. The city was trying to remove all traces of James, who announced on July 8 that he would sign with the Miami Heat.
Sweden's Linus Thornblad clears the bar during the high jump. Thornblad was competing at the IAAF Diamond League meet on July 8, in Lausanne, Switzerland.
