Ryan Kalish, who was placed on the minor league DL on August 23 with a neck injury, will undergo season-ending surgery on Thursday, according to Alex Speier of WEEI.
The surgery will repair a bulging disk that is impinging a nerve and causing soreness in his neck.
Kalish, 23, played just 16 games in Pawtucket before spending the majority of the season on the DL with a torn labrum in his shoulder. After a two-game rehab stint in Lowell, he returned to Pawtucket, batting .161 in eight gamesbefore landing back on the DL.
Last season, Kalish appeared in 53 games with the Red Sox and batted .252.305.405 with four home runs and ten stolen bases.
The expected time for recovery and rehabilitation from Kalish's surgery is three months.
