Brandon Meriweather recalls the time a coach held a funeral for a gameplan

There was some recent confusion over what Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer did or did not do with stuffed animals and fake blood for the sake of motivating his team. With Brandon Meriweather making his weekly appearance on Toucher and Rich on Wednesday, the former NFL safety was asked the strangest thing he’s seen a coach do to motivate a team.

“I think the best thing I’ve ever seen a coach do was, after we played terrible, we took the game film and went to the practice field and we buried the game film and put a little tombstone over it and just said, ‘You know, we’re going to get rid of this game and let’s not let this happen again,’” Meriweather said, “and we ended up winning out after that.”

Asked whether that coach happened to be Bill Belichick, Meriweather laughed.

“No, that wasn’t Bill,” Meriweather replied while still laughing.

A first-round pick of the Patriots in 2007, Meriweather played for three other teams after the Pats. That narrows the potential NFL coaches down to Lovie Smith (Bears), Mike Shanahan (Redskins), Jay Gruden (Redskins) or Tom Coughlin (Giants). Of the coaches Meriweather had after Belichick, Shanahan would figure to be the most likely candidate given that the 2012 Redskins won their final seven games after a loss to the Panthers. That is, of course, assuming Meriweather was talking about one of his NFL coaches.
