Bill Belichick addresses Josh Gordon's suspension in brief statement

FOXBORO -- Bill Belichick didn't completely dodge the Josh Gordon news Friday morning.

The New England Patriots coach opened his press conference by issuing a statement on the veteran wide receiver, who was suspended indefinitely Thursday for violating the terms of his reinstatement.

"I spoke with Josh [Thursday] morning, as I have several times since he's been here," Belichick said. "It's obviously an unfortunate situation. Personally, I wish him the very best, as we all do on this team.

"He's made a statement, the organization's made a statement, the league's made a statement. I've spoken [about] him at length over the last three months. So, I don't really have anything at this point to add to that.

"It's a private matter. Hope that he's able to deal with it successfully. Otherwise, we're moving onto Buffalo."

When asked how difficult it was to lose Gordon this late in the season, Belichick responded, "It is what it is."

The Patriots coach gave similarly terse responses to other follow-up questions, insisting he's focused on Sunday's game against the Bills.

It appears Gordon met with Belichick on Thursday morning shortly after learning of his suspension. Hse then tweeted a statement announcing he is stepping away from the Patriots to focus on his mental health.

Gordon's Patriots teammates reacted similarly to the news Thursday, wishing the best for the 27-year-old but focusing their attention on Buffalo.
