How Josh Gordon news impacts Patriots' depth chart at wide receiver

Josh Gordon is facing an indefinite suspension from the NFL, and he announced Thursday he's stepping away from the New England Patriots to focus on his mental health.

The veteran wide receiver was very productive on the field for the Patriots since making his debut for the team in Week 4.

Gordon's absence will have a ripple affect on the Patriots' offense, and it leaves them a little thin at wide receiver.

Here's an updated look at their wide receiver depth chart.

Julian Edelman: 63 rec, 711 yards, 4 TD
Chris Hogan: 29 rec, 484 yards, 3 TD
Phillip Dorsett: 27 rec, 256, 2 TD
Cordarrelle Patterson: 20 rec, 244 yards, 3 TD

One player who could see his involvement in the Patriots' offense rise is running back James White. He leads the team with 81 receptions (a franchise record for running backs), along with 699 yards and six receiving touchdowns.

The more White plays, the more the Patriots win, so a heavier dose of the talented running back could be in store for New England's offense as the playoffs near.

The Patriots are scoring 33 points per game at home and just 21 per game on the road. Losing a player of Gordon's caliber is a huge loss, but it won't be a season-ending one if Edelman, White and tight end Rob Gronkowski take their performances to a higher level.
