Notre Dame sets Wednesday deadline to clear C.J. Prosise

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame running back C.J. Prosise is still working through the concussion protocol with an eye on passing a test Wednesday that would allow him to be cleared to play Saturday against Wake Forest.

Coach Brian Kelly said Prosise’s next step to clear the physical activity hurdle in the concussion protocol, and Notre Dame will have a better idea after Tuesday’s practice of the redshirt junior running back’s chances of being available this week.

Prosise has 975 yards and 11 touchdowns on 146 carries this year (an average of 6.59 yards per carry), and also has 25 receptions for 291 yards and a touchdown. He’s proven to be one of the more explosive players at the college level, gaining 10 or more yards on 47 plays this year — the third-highest total among FBS players — and is one of 16 players at college football’s top level with a play of 90 or more yards.

In place of Prosise, freshman Josh Adams carried 20 times for 147 yards against Pittsburgh.

Notre Dame did get some good news on the injury front this week, with Kelly revealing graduate student safety Avery Sebastian — who broke a bone in his foot Week 1 against Texas — was cleared for physical activity on Monday.

Additionally, Kelly said redshirt junior nose guard Jarron Jones could have a chance to play in Notre Dame’s bowl/playoff game as he works his way back from a torn MCL suffered in mid-August. Jones, who initially was ruled out for the season, currently is rebuilding strength in his leg and could be four to six weeks away from potentially being cleared to return to practice.
