49ers injury report: Williams misses practice, Deebo limited

Eight-time Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams did not practice with the 49ers on Thursday, increasing the chances that rookie Jaylon Moore could replace him for a second consecutive game.

Rookie quarterback Trey Lance practiced in a limited role for the second day in a row after sitting out last week's game against the Indianapolis Colts with a left knee sprain. He appears to be on pace to return as the 49ers' backup to Jimmy Garoppolo on Sunday when the 49ers face the Chicago Bears.

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel returned to the practice field in a limited fashion on Thursday after sitting out Wednesday’s workout with a calf condition. Samuel was provided the 49ers with their only threat in the passing game through six games. He has 38 receptions for 648 yards and four touchdowns.

Defensive end Nick Bosa did not practice Thursday, as he was given a day off due to a heavy early season workload during games. On Sunday, he played 56 of the 49ers' 68 defensive snaps. The 49ers' listed Bosa's absence as a "resting player."

Williams sustained injuries in the 49ers’ Week 5 game against the Arizona Cardinals. After the bye week, he still was not available to practice last week. He sat out the game Sunday night against the Colts. The 49ers turned to Moore, a fifth-round draft pick from Western Michigan, to protect the blindside of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

“I thought Jaylon did some good things,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said this week. “He showed the game's not too big for him. No one was perfect in that game, he made a couple of mistakes, just like a lot of people did.

“He was ready for the challenge and I think the way he'll respond to this, I think is going to get better and better and be a good player for us.”

Out of 32 pass-blocking downs against Indianapolis, Moore yielded two quarterback pressures (no sacks or hits), according to Pro Football Focus.

Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and defensive end Dee Ford remained out of practice while in the NFL's return to play protocol after sustaining concussions on Sunday night. Al-Shaair was seen working on a side field, which suggests he is getting closer to being cleared to return.

Defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw did not practice, and his season could be over with knee surgery as a possibility. Maurice Hurst did not practice with a calf injury, and safety Jaquiski Tartt is expected to miss time with a bone bruise of his knee.

Defensive end Samson Ebukam was limited in practice due to an ankle injury.

For the Bears, defensive end Khalil Mack, who leads the team with six sacks, did not practice due to a foot injury. He is not expected to be available for Sunday's game.
