49ers try new secondary combos against Vikings in practice

EAGAN, Minn. -- The 49ers' defense worked through a number of player combinations Wednesday during their joint practices with the Minnesota Vikings.

The club has several players working their way back from injury, including safety Jimmie Ward (hamstring), cornerbacks Emmanuel Moseley (hamstring) and Charvarius Ward (core muscle), which has given other players a chance to get reps in practice.

Veteran cornerback Ken Crawley, who the club signed just one week ago on August 10, was on the field with the first-team defense along with Deommodore Lenoir and safeties Talanoa Hufanga and Tarvarius Moore. Sam Womack joined the group on nickel downs.

The 49ers are hopeful to see Charvarius Ward return to the field by their Week 1 matchup with the Chicago Bears. Moseley looks nearly set to return, as he was seen in individual drills on Wednesday.

George Odum also saw time lined up next to Hufanga on Wednesday. The safety had the interception of the day on a Kirk Cousins pass intended for Dalvin Cook. There appeared to be miscommunication between the quarterback and the ball carrier, and Odum took advantage.

The 49ers' safety was running with inside leverage on Cook down the left sideline. When the running back broke to the outside, Odum moved inside and cleanly caught the ball.

There was the usual rotation at linebacker, with Fred Warner, Dre Greenlaw and Azeez Al-Shaair taking the lead. The hardest hits of the day were when this group was making tackles during team drills. The sound of their pads popping was enough to incite the reaction of the fans in attendance.

The defensive line also used plenty of players in rotation. Javon Kinlaw saw increased time lined up on the interior. The defensive tackle appeared to see a lot of double coverage when on the line with Nick Bosa, Kevin Givens and Samson Ebukam.

More practice highlights from Day 1 vs. Vikings:

- Defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway has returned to team drills and was seen lined up with the second team. With his size, he quickly was able to make his presence known, moving the Vikings offensive line on their heels towards the quarterback.

- Arik Armstead was back on the field for individual drills

- Both Drake Jackson and Kemoko Turay were seen getting pressure on quarterback Kirk Cousins along with Bosa. Turay had a clear sack of Cousins in team drills.

- Charles Omenihu rotated with Ebukam for the spot on the end of the defensive line when Bosa was on the field

- Bosa quickly alternated from the right side to the left during the same series keeping the Viking offensive line on their toes.
