SANTA CLARA –- Guard Andrew Tiller, who missed one series of the 49ers’ season opener with a right ankle sprain, took part in limited practice during Wednesday.
The 49ers began preparations to face the Carolina Panthers with eight players taking part in limited work. Each player appears to be on pace to be available for Sunday's game.
Defensive tackle Arik Armstead was limited due to shoulder and knee ailments, the club reported on its participation report. Armstead missed the entire exhibition season with shoulder injury, but played 36 snaps, mostly in pass-rush situations, and recorded a sack Monday night against the Los Angeles Rams.
“That’s been the plan all along is we went into the game erring on the side of playing him more on later downs,” 49ers defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil said. “Eventually, when he feels good and ready to roll, he’s a guy that you’d like to only bring off the field when he needs to grab a quick water break and get him back out there just because he can be such a difference maker in the run and pass game. Had some splash plays for us on Monday night. So, he’s a guy we need to continue to bring along.”
Chris Davis, who won the 49ers’ nickel back job during training camp, returned to limited practice after sitting out Monday’s game with a hamstring injury. Jimmie Ward started at right cornerback and moved inside to cover the slot receiver in passing situations.
When asked if Davis will return to that role when he’s cleared to play, O’Neil said, “That’s something that we’ll talk about each week.”
Tiller started at right guard for the 49ers on Monday night, replacing Anthony Davis in the lineup after Davis did not participate in Saturday's practice.
