Marquise Goodwin blasts fans calling his NFL opt-out decision ‘stupid'

Former 49ers receiver Marquise Goodwin announced his decision to opt out of the 2020 NFL season Tuesday with concerns over the coronavirus pandemic, and he has plenty of reasons to do so.

But of course in this ridiculously dumb year, people aren't happy with Goodwin's personal choice. The veteran receiver, who the 49ers traded to the Philadelphia Eagles during this year's NFL draft, had the perfect response Wednesday on Twitter.

Goodwin and his wife, Morgan, had their baby, Marae, on Feb. 19, 2020. The birth came after they have suffered two miscarriages since November 2017.

"This is my reason, y'all," Goodwin said Tuesday while showing his newly born baby. "She is the reason I'm opting out for the season. After choosing football so many times, I feel I am inclined to make the right decision in choosing my family first.

"I won’t take the chance of experiencing another loss because of my selfish decision making. I can't do it. It's not something I'm willing to live with."

Goodwin played three seasons with the 49ers, from 2017 through 2019. He finished his 49ers career with 1,543 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

The 29-year-old did state in his announcement that he plans to play in 2021 and beyond after sitting out this season.
