San Francisco 49ers running back Matt Breida underwent an MRI examination on his left ankle that came back negative Monday, a source told NBC Sports Bay Area.

Breida, the 49ers' leading rusher, was injured on the final play of the first quarter in San Francisco's 28-18 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. The MRI revealed a mid-ankle sprain, which is considered good news with a shorter timetable to return than a high ankle sprain, according to the source.

Breida likely faces an uphill battle to play next Monday against the Green Bay Packers. He saw limited practice time the past two weeks with knee and shoulder injuries, but he has proven to be a quick healer.

The second-year pro from Georgia Southern ranks fifth in the NFL with 369 rushing yards on 49 attempts. His 7.5 rushing average is tops among running backs with at least three rushing attempts per game.
