Khrush making case for A's return with Triple-A power display

0:00

Brodie Brazil and Dave Stewart take a caller’s question regarding Khris Davis’ fit on the A’s.

Sometimes, you just need to call an old friend. It might be time for the Athletics to do just that.

Khris Davis is doing everything he can right now in Triple-A with the Las Vegas Aviators to get back to Oakland. Davis hit two home runs and a triple Tuesday night, continuing his red-hot streak at the plate in Sin City. Davis now has homered in three straight games and is on a five-game hitting streak.

Davis' triple just missed being another homer.

The former MLB home run leader has homered six times in the last seven games for the Aviators. He now has played 10 games with the A's Triple-A affiliate this season, and they couldn't have gone much better. Davis is slashing .357/.386/.929 with six homers, two doubles, two triples and 16 RBI. That's a gigantic difference from the hitter he was earlier this season with the Texas Rangers.

After five seasons with the A's, Davis was traded this past offseason to Texas. The move did not favor the slugger. In 22 games, Davis, 33, hit .157 with just two home runs. He was designated for assignment on June 13.

Davis went nearly two months without a job before the A's orchestrated a reunion with the DH. He was signed as a free agent on Aug. 4 and is on a mission to be hitting long balls at the Coliseum again.

"I got my swing back," Davis said Tuesday night to The Rickey Henderson of Blogs. "I'm just having fun."

Davis is not on the 40-man roster, making it tough for him to be called up to the A's when rosters expand from 26 to 28 starting on Sept. 1. However, Ramon Laureano's 80-game suspension and Stephen Piscotty's wrist injury play in his favor. The A's certainly could use a power surge, too.

Matt Olson has 32 home runs, but he hits from the left side. The A's are lacking in right-handed power right now. Matt Chapman has 19 homers, Sean Murphy has 14 and Mark Canha has 12. Davis would add a big punch to that group if he has indeed found his swing.

In fact, an A's DH hasn't homered since Aug. 14, and that was from left-hander Mitch Moreland.

It won't be an easy road back, but Davis is making as strong of a case as he can to wear green and gold again. If that does indeed happen, he earned this comeback story.
