MLB mock draft 2019: A's seek college bat if available for No. 29 pick

Share

Ahhh draft day -- a day where young athletes start a new journey in professional sports and their text messages blow up from people they haven't spoken to since high school.

Free advice guys -- leave those people on read.

The first round of the 2019 MLB Draft will take place at the MLB Network studios on Monday and the Baltimore Orioles will have the first overall selection. The A's will have the No. 29 overall pick, thanks to a successful season in 2018.

But who will they take? Well, we don't know until this individual's name is called, but until then -- that's why we have mock drafts. And here are who the mocks across the baseball world has Oakland taking in the first round:

ESPN: SS, Greg Jones, UNC-Wilmington

ESPN's Keith Law predicts the Green and Gold will take a chance on a shortstop: Greg Jones from UNC-Wilmington.

He also adds a note that they're in on third baseman Brett Baty, shortstops Logan Davidson and Will Wilson, right-handed pitcher JJ Goss, and Kody Hoese, who I wrote about earlier in May from an original Law mock draft.

CBS Sports: SS, Greg Jones, UNC-Wilmington

On to CBS Sports!

Mike Axisa also has Jones for his pick.

"The A's would jump at Kody Hoese, Michael Busch, or Will Wilson with this pick. All three are off the board in our mock draft though, so we'll give Oakland the fast-rising -- and fast-running -- Jones," Axisa writes. "The draft's fastest runner tore the cover off the ball in front of many scouts and executives the last two weeks, pushing him into first-round consideration. Even if he winds up in center field to get more value from his legs, Jones has a chance to be a dynamic leadoff man."

Bleacher Report: SS, Greg Jones, UNC-Wilmington

Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter put together his mock draft and also has Law and Axisa's pick of Jones heading to Oakland's organization.

"With true 80-grade speed and a strong finish to the season, Jones has climbed into the first-round conversation, and he could go as high as No. 23 to Colorado. If he makes it this far, the Athletics are "locked in" on the UNC Wilmington shortstop, who could eventually wind up in center field, where his wheels would allow him to cover serious ground," Reuter writes. "If he's off the board, a college bat seems to be the preference."

Yeah, he pretty much has Oakland A's written all over him.

MLB Pipeline: RHP, Seth Johnson, Campbell

For MLB Pipeline's Jonathan Mayo, he listed right-handed pitcher from Campbell, Seth Johnson, as the A's selection, but don't be surprised if they stick with the offensive theme as well.

"It's still possible the A's will go college bat here, but with the run above, there may not be one they covet," Mayo writes. "Johnson, a converted infielder, is a rare college arm with upside."

Every team wants a power bat -- that goes without saying -- but every team wants pitching as well. It appears this will be about who is available up until this point.

Baseball America: OF, Kameron Misner, Missouri

For Baseball America's mock, Carlos Collazo has the A's taking Kameron Misner, an outfielder from Missouri.

"We know the Athletics like the toolset that Jones has, but with him off the board in this scenario, we have them taking a player with an equally exciting toolset in Misner," he writes

Misner is a lefty bat who continued to have successful campaigns in his freshman and sophomore seasons including a team-best .360 batting average last year. He did suffer a foot injury last season which forced him to miss six weeks of play.

The college bat is sensing to be the theme around here.

FanGraphs: Kameron Misner, OF, Missouri

Both Kiley McDaniel and Eric Longenhagen of FanGraphs published their "Mock Draft 4.0: The Morning Of," on well, the morning of the draft. They also like the team taking Misner with the No. 29 overall pick, but Jones continues to be the target if he remains on the board during this time.

"Misner and Davidson both make sense as Oakland has been looking for ceiling of late with their first pick."
