Trevor Bauer provides MLB, player updates amid coronavirus pandemic

It didn't take long to see how the sports world was impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Many leagues are delaying or shutting down operations completely in order to ensure the safety of the public.

The two-week delay of Opening Day and cancellation of spring training games were just a fraction of how the Major League Baseball world was hit. Beyond the players and coaching staff, many are banking on baseball to live. Their everyday finances depend on baseball being played.

Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer gave an update on the current state of players and is aware of the impact COVID-19 has on the league and beyond.

"This is a very serious issue," Bauer said in a video interview on Momentum. "We're not sure how serious this actually is."

Bauer, along with most of us, has questions about the illness and what this means for the sports world. For now, he can speak on behalf of some of the players and his specific team.

In addition to the spring training games being canceled, Bauer mentioned there are no practices being held either.

"We have been informed, as the Reds, that we are not to come to the facility today (this was taped on Friday), the facility will be opened, we believe, in the future, on an optional basis," Bauer said. "Players do not have to report, but they can if they want -- except for today."

Bauer said the next form of business had to do with a meeting between the player's union and the league office. They would be meeting later that Friday and Saturday to determine the next steps.

A league source told NBC Sports California details of that meeting could be finalized and announced by Monday.

For now, April 9 is the report date, for regular-season games to begin. That's the tentative date across the league as well.

"It's my personal opinion that will change and get pushed back more," Bauer added.

Giants' CEO Larry Baer detailed the scheduling for the team which would have games played just as the schedule lies if that April 9 date were to still happen.

A league source tells NBC Sports California to "be prepared for the end of May or even beginning of June," as possible start dates.

It's a tough time right now, but Bauer did have something entertaining up his sleeve.

Naturally.

An idea from pitcher David Carpenter on Twitter turned into a full-on sandlot-themed baseball game for players to participate down in Arizona.

Many players appeared to be interested in the game including Brewers pitcher Jacob Faria.

A's pitchers Liam Hendriks and Sean Manaea, and Giants starter Jeff Samardzija have been invited to participate in the game as well.

All players participating will be mic'd up which has been a popular way for fans to enjoy games this season during the spring before the shutdown.

The game details of when and where this will take place have not yet been announced, but Bauer tweeted it would for sure be happening.

As players remain uncertain of weeks to come, Bauer and Momentum have set up a GoFundMe to support stadium workers who have been displaced by the delay.

As far as player and league updates from Bauer, he encourages those to follow Momentum for the latest on what's going on.
