Ex-Giants ace Rodón's Yanks debut delayed again by back issue

Former Giants starter Carlos Rodón has yet to make his New York Yankees debut, and the timeline for when it will come remains unknown.

Rodón told reporters on Friday that the back injury he has been dealing with might be "chronic." Doctors believe the issue, which is making him feel "tightness" and "restriction," could be the result of the southpaw's pitching mechanics, per Rodón.

The two-time All-Star will get a cortisone shot early next week in hopes it will lead to a quicker return, and Rodón will be shut down from throwing following the injection.

“Whenever my body tells me I can throw and everyone agrees that I can throw, then I’ll start throwing,” Rodón said, via The Athletic. “Whatever that ramp-up takes, however I get to the mound or however I maneuver that ramp-up and that rehab, I can’t set a date for you. I would have thought I would be pitching here for the club now.”

Rodón made just one start in spring training before being sidelined with a left forearm strain, which no longer is an issue, but the back injury that popped up during his rehab has prevented him from getting on the mound so far in 2023.

"It really sucks,” Rodón said. “I want to be pitching for the New York Yankees. I want to be pitching here this series.”

Rodón was supposed to make his Yankees debut against the Giants in the season-opening series but the forearm strain derailed those plans.

Rodón, 30, signed a six-year, $162 million contract with the Yankees in free agency after one season with the Giants. The deal made him MLB's eighth-highest-paid pitcher based on average salary.
