Zack Wheeler was once seen as the next Giants top prospect to turn into a star on the mound in San Francisco. At 6-foot-4, the No. 6 pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, certainly looked the part.
Two years later, the Giants shipped Wheeler off to New York in a trade with the Mets to acquire outfielder Carlos Beltran.

While Beltran was a rental and just played in San Francisco for the second half of the 2011 season, Wheeler was thought to be a long-term fixture in the Mets' rotation. But, the 26-year-old has been marred by injuries.

Wheeler underwent Tommy John surgery in March of last season and was expected to return to the Mets on July 1. A second setback has forced the franchise to temporarily shut down the young right-hander with right elbow discomfort, reports MLB.com's Anthony DiComo.
"All I can say is he's had a little bit of elbow discomfort," Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said to reporters. "He hasn't thrown in a couple of days."
San Francisco Giants
In early April, Wheeler went through a minor procedure to remove an undissolved stitch from his right elbow. That setback sent his expected date to right after the All-Star break. There is now no timetable for Wheeler's return.
Through two seasons in the majors, Wheeler is 18-16 with a 3.50 ERA in New York. He went 11-11 with a 3.54 ERA in 2014, his first full season and last time in the bigs.
Beltran hit .323/.369/.551 with seven home runs in his 44 games with the Giants. San Francisco failed to make the playoffs in 2011 after winning the World Series one season before.
